Today I had a hospital appointment with the oncology team, in Burton.
This appointment was to determine whether or not my cancer is hereditary. Jo, the nurse I had my appointment with, asked me about my family members, listing them on my Mum’s side, then my Dad’s side, to build a family tree. Jo then asked if there was any history of cancer in the family, listing who had cancer, if any and what type. This gave Jo a bigger picture to work with.
Jo explained, my tumour was tested for all kinds of things, they concluded my cancer is not hereditary. This is what they say is random, however, as cancer has been in the family, my sister, brother and son’s are at risk of bowel cancer. My son’s should be tested for this when they are 40.

If either of my son’s don’t get bowel cancer, this means it’s skipped a generation, which could break the cycle.

Jo also explained to me, I have all the protein in my body, needed to prevent me from getting cancer again, it doesn’t mean I won’t get cancer again, but it does mean I have everything to help prevent getting it again. Some people don’t have this.
